In September of 1817, I travel with Lady Breckenridge to my boyhood home in northern Norfolk only to discover mysterious happenings in and around the Lacey estate. A young woman, cousin of one of my old friends, has gone missing, strange objects appear in my ruined house, and the dark windmills on the marshes seem to pull me to them.
The underworld criminal, James Denis, requests that while I am in Norfolk, I deliver a message from him to a local squire. A simple task, but of course one that lands me squarely in the midst of international theft and murder.
As I struggle for solutions, I learn more about Denis’s past and find myself joining forces with him to flush out a brutal killer and save the one person about whom Denis admits to caring.
